History
For many students, history can seem like a flood of disconnected names, dates, terms and events. Helping students understand how history shaped our present world can turn a chaotic whirlwind of seemingly disconnected details into compelling stories that inform their future.
English
Reading comprehension and clear, expressive written work is the basis of all academic work. English is as complex and difficult to master as it is rich and versatile. Fortunately, our human brains are wired for language acquisition and communication. Reading and writing skills improve over time, a process that can be accelerated with guidance. I work with students to evaluate their natural strengths (often unrecognized) and then develop individualized strategies to help them build-up their written language proficiency, reading speed and comprehension.
Academic Skills
For most students, their academic success is directly related to the amount of organization and planning they apply to their work. Time management, careful attention to assignment instructions, and test preparation are the basics. But note taking, efficient reading utilizing speed reading techniques, summarization and information management are all tools that successful students utilize to consistently produce excellent work. I begin every tutoring engagement by evaluating a student’s study habits and skills and then systematically work with them to enhance their use of these tools to improve their academic performance.

Importantly, my teaching isn’t about me, it’s about my students. However, all of us see the world through our individual experiences and perspective. I come to education after a long career in business and software programming. I combine a wealth of real-world experience, a strong background working with youth, and excellent academic credentials to my teaching.
